Carccu® Awarded PEFC Chain of Custody Certification for Environmental Responsibility

In April 2023, Carccu® was awarded the PEFC Chain of Custody (CoC) Certification developed by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). The PEFC label on Carccu®’s products is a sign of responsibility as it indicates that the wood-based raw materials used in the products can be traced from certified forests through the entire supply chain, maintaining transparency and accountability in sustainable sourcing.

Certified products support ecosystem health

Currently, few packaging manufacturers have the PEFC Chain of Custody certification. By using certified raw materials Carccu® is able to contribute to the conservation of forest biodiversity, an essential factor in the health and functioning of the ecosystem. Sustainably managed forests are carbon sinks and contribute to the fight against climate change. The PEFC Chain of Custody certification can also help reduce risks related to the origin of raw materials and ensure that the company is not involved in deforestation, illegal logging or other undesirable practices.

Ensuring responsibility throughout the supply chain

The PEFC Chain of Custody certification is not just focused on forest management, but certification extends throughout the supply chain. This means that Carccu® can trace the origin of its raw materials from the forest to the final product, i.e. it can show where its raw materials come from. This increases transparency. PEFC standards take into account not only the environment but also human rights, workers’ rights and the rights of indigenous people groups. Overall, the PEFC Chain of Custody certification awarded to Carccu® demonstrates that the company has taken an active role in sustainability issues and is making a positive contribution to the environment and society.

“The PEFC Chain of Custody certification is part of a continuum, which also includes the ISO 9001 and ISO 14 001 quality system standards we obtained last year”, says Lasse Borg, CEO of Carccu®. “Most of the raw materials we source are certified, and we are constantly working to get the PEFC label on more products.”

Questions about PEFC Chain of Custody certification:

What is PEFC Chain of Custody certified paper?

PEFC Chain of Custody certified paper is made from wood-based raw materials that can be traced from certified forests through the entire supply chain, ensuring transparency and accountability in sustainable sourcing. Developed by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), this certification helps combat deforestation, protect biodiversity, and support local communities. It also promotes fair wages, safe working conditions, and the rights of indigenous peoples.

Businesses that use PEFC Chain of Custody certified paper strengthen their sustainability efforts. As consumers increasingly prefer certified products, this certification adds value for eco-conscious industries. It is widely recognized across the printing, packaging, and office supply sectors.

What’s the difference between FSC® and PEFC?

FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) both promote sustainable forest management but differ in scope and approach. FSC®, the developer of the FSC® Chain of Custody certification, is a globally recognized, centralized system with stricter environmental and social standards. PEFC, the developer of the PEFC Chain of Custody certification, operates as an umbrella organization endorsing national certification schemes, making it more adaptable to regional differences. FSC® is often favored by NGOs and environmentally focused companies, while PEFC is more widely used in commercial forestry. PEFC tends to work more closely with industry stakeholders, whereas FSC® has stricter controls on logging practices. Both certifications ensure responsible sourcing, but FSC® is generally seen as more rigorous. The choice depends on business needs and sustainability priorities.
