PEFC label Carccu 03-31-319

Carccu® awarded PEFC forest certification for environmental responsibility

In April 2023, Carccu® was certified by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). The PEFC label on products is a sign of responsibility as it indicates that the wood-based raw materials in the products come from sustainably managed forests. This means respecting the ecological, social and economic values of forests.

PEFC-certified products support ecosystem health

Currently, few packaging manufacturers have PEFC certification. By using PEFC-certified raw materials Carccu® is able to contribute to the conservation of forest biodiversity, an essential factor in the health and functioning of the ecosystem. Sustainably managed forests are carbon sinks and contribute to the fight against climate change. PEFC certification can also help reduce risks related to the origin of raw materials and ensure that the company is not involved in deforestation, illegal logging or other undesirable practices.

Ensuring responsibility throughout the supply chain

PEFC is not just focused on forest management, but certification extends throughout the supply chain. This means that Carccu® can trace the origin of its raw materials from the forest to the final product, i.e. it can show where its raw materials come from. This increases transparency. PEFC standards take into account not only the environment but also human rights, workers’ rights and the rights of indigenous people groups. Overall, the PEFC certification awarded to Carccu® demonstrates that the company has taken an active role in sustainability issues and is making a positive contribution to the environment and society.
“The PEFC certification is part of a continuum, which also includes the ISO 9001 and ISO 14 001 quality system standards we obtained last year”, says Lasse Borg, CEO of Carccu®. “Most of the raw materials we source are PEFC certified, and we are constantly working to get the label on more products.”

Questions about PEFC certification:

What is PEFC certified paper?

PEFC-certified paper comes from sustainably managed forests, ensuring environmental, social, and economic responsibility. The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) guarantees that wood-based materials are sourced ethically and traceable through a strict chain of custody system. This certification helps combat deforestation, protect biodiversity, and support local communities. It also promotes fair wages, safe working conditions, and the rights of indigenous people. Businesses using PEFC-certified paper enhance their sustainability efforts and meet environmental governance standards. Consumers increasingly prefer certified products, making PEFC a valuable choice for eco-conscious industries. The certification is widely recognized in printing, packaging, and office supplies.

What’s the difference between FSC and PEFC?

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) both promote sustainable forest management but differ in scope and approach. FSC is a globally recognized, centralized system with stricter environmental and social standards. PEFC operates as an umbrella organization endorsing national certification schemes, making it more flexible for regional differences. FSC is often favored by NGOs and environmentally focused companies, while PEFC is more widely used in commercial forestry. PEFC tends to work more closely with industry stakeholders, whereas FSC has stricter controls on logging practices. Both certifications ensure responsible sourcing, but FSC is generally seen as more rigorous. The choice depends on business needs and sustainability priorities.
