Sustainable production of packaging materials
Carccu produces environmentally-friendly packaging materials through eco-friendly methods
Carccu paper products are manufactured by EPP-Pack Oy, a Finnish family business. We provide a wide range of eco-friendly products for businesses. We mainly produce paper packaging materials for use in the food industry, fast food restaurants, and flower stores, among others. Our company invests in the quality of our products and in our environmentally-friendly production methods and corporate responsibility.
Taking care of the environment is at the heart of all our activities – from start to finish. We only use sustainable and eco-friendly materials in our production. Our aim is to minimize waste and the environmental load at every step of the production process. We do this by using fossil-free electricity and by recycling as much production waste as possible. We recycle all production waste, and only domestic waste ends up landfilled. By delivering high-quality products to our clients in small batches, we enable them to reduce the amount of waste they produce. Many of our products are recyclable or biodegradable.
We use high-quality and environmentally-friendly ink
The ink used in our packaging is eco-friendly, high-quality, and water based. Using water-based ink is good for the environment and helps prevent harmful emissions, such as volatile organic compound (VOCs). Our package printing also complies with the Swiss Ordinance on Materials and Articles. We use efficient, flexographic printing machines and have an agile production process. This enables us to produce paper packaging that is both cost-effective and eco-friendly.
Any waste ink is mixed with black pigment and used in kraft paper printing. After this, any surplus ink is dried to minimize the amount of waste.
We recycle production-based waste
We aim to minimize the amount of landfilled waste generated by our activities. One way we do this is recycling. In fact, we are very good at recycling (our recycling rate was 71% in 2020)! But we can still do better, and we are committed to continuing to reduce the amount of waste that ends up as landfill. Investing in recycling and constantly developing new products that use production waste is part of our efforts to achieve this goal.
We currently recycle 70% of all production waste, with 66% being re-processed for use in new products. Any waste that cannot be re-used is incinerated to produce heat and electricity.
All the wastepaper and waste cardboard we generate is taken to a paper mill for use in new paper production. And the cycle is complete when this waste is made into the paper packaging sleeves that we use in our production. We aim to keep materials in circulation as long as possible. This is the circular economy at its best. In other words, we help protect the environment by using existing materials as long as possible, instead of constantly producing new ones. We also sell some of the waste material generated by our production processes to other companies, for use as packaging material.
We recycle all metal and plastic waste, too. The ink we use is delivered to us in metal barrels, which are then used by another company in their own production processes. The rest of our metal waste is recycled for use in the metal industry and in the manufacturing of new products. The PE plastic used in producing the stretch films we use with delivery pallets is recycled into new plastic raw materials.
We save energy and use climate-friendly electricity
Recycling and using environmentally-sound materials in production is very important. We also look to operate in other environmentally-friendly ways. These include saving energy and using fossil-free energy.
In fact, we have been using LED lights in our facilities since 2012. LED lamps are more energy-efficient and kinder to the environment. Our production processes use fossil-free electricity, which is climate neutral. In other words, our production processes do not increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. We are constantly looking for aspects of our operations in which new energy savings can be made.
We make recyclable and bio-degradable food packaging
We manufacture ecological food packaging for restaurants. Our product range includes paper cups, wooden utensils, pizza boxes, and other types of packaging used by restaurants. Most of the food packaging we produce is recyclable or biodegradable. This means the packaging can be either recycled as paperboard or composted industrially.
We deliver our products to our customers in small batches, which helps them use 100% of everything they order. With high-quality products delivered in optimal batch sizes, the amount of waste is reduced. We also deliver our products direct to customers’ facilities in small, space-saving travel units. On top of this, we utilize the waste generated through package printing as packaging filler.
