Frequently Asked Questions about packaging papers:
Different materials are used in packaging according to their intended use. Carccu® produces various types of paper, including recycled paper, kraft paper, sulphite paper, grease-resistant papers, coated papers, and floral paper for various packaging needs.
Packaging costs can be lowered by choosing the right-sized package with the help of an expert, then selecting a material that suits the product being protected. It is advisable to seek optimal solutions for packaging design in collaboration with a packaging material manufacturer.
Finland is one of the leading countries in the paper industry and is particularly known for paper and pulp made from wood fibre. Finland is also a pioneer in the use of renewable energy sources for factory energy production. There are several high-quality paper and cardboard manufacturers in Finland, and Finnish-made papers and cardboard are highly regarded worldwide.
The most ecological packaging materials are those with minimal environmental impact throughout their lifecycle, such as recycled materials and bio-based materials. Generally, paper is an environmentally friendly packaging material because it is made from a renewable resource, wood, and is recyclable, produced in an environmentally friendly manner, and biodegradable. However, the method of producing the packaging materials should also be ecologically sound, something that is a particular strength of Carccu®.
Natural materials like paper, cardboard, metal, or glass, are the best alternatives to synthetic packaging. These materials are more environmentally friendly than plastic because they are renewable, recyclable, and biodegradable. Recycled paper is generally not a suitable solution for food packaging, with a few exceptions. However, cardboard can have multiple layers, allowing food to be packaged in such a way that the layer in direct contact with the food is made from non-recycled fibre while the rest is recycled, thus making it both food-safe and as ecological as possible.
Flexographic printing is a direct printing method used to print images or text on materials such as paper by using a flexographic printing machine. This particular process consists of several stages, including pattern preparation, plate production, plate installation on the printing machine, colour mixing, printing, and final product inspection.
Paper cannot be shaped as extensively as plastic. Although paper is relatively easily breakable and not suitable for packaging heavy items, it is a versatile packaging material in terms of durability. Some grades are very strong and do not easily break or get wet. Uncoated paper does not tolerate moisture well but, with various finishing treatments, paper can be made suitable for various uses with food, such as preparing and packaging particularly greasy items.
Different types of paper have different properties, and different grades are suitable for different purposes. Generally, the advantages of paper include its affordability, light weight, printability, and ease of handling (cutting, folding). Paper is also an environmentally friendly material as it is made from wood, a renewable energy source, and is recyclable.

The Carccu® story is one of Finnish entrepreneurship and a passion for finding the most efficient packaging solution to support our customers’ brands. The company’s current name is derived from the small village community of Karkku located near the Finnish town of Sastamala in the Rautavesi national landscape. Olli Borg, who is still involved in the company’s operations, assembled the first printing press at EPP-Pack Oy’s premises at the Karkku site in the 1980s.
What came next is an eminent part of Finnish flexographic printing history, and, today, we develop our business feet firmly on the ground and our eyes focused on the future. From the beginning, Carccu has also focused on the international market, which has resulted in a long tradition of export trade. Over the years, pioneering vision and innovation have made our company Finland’s leading printing house specializing in customized packaging solutions.
Even though the world has changed, some things remain the same at Carccu – a love of entrepreneurship and a desire to understand the pressing business needs of our customers.
“We are grateful for our roots as a family business, which has been operating for half a century, and for the work of previous generations of entrepreneurs. We also cherish the heritage of handicraft in our work, and our highly dedicated workers have years of solid experience and exceptional technical expertise,” says Lasse Borg, CEO and fourth-generation entrepreneur.
